Huddle 2023: Keeping it real: the vital role of trusted news brands

At Huddle 2023, four young journalists shed light on the realities of journalism in the modern news landscape and discussed how news publishing brands and the journalism they create plays a significant role in the good growth revolution.

Niki West, Director of Agency and Client Services at Newsworks, led a discussion centring on the vital role of truth and trust to news brands. The panel unanimously stressed the significance of authentic journalism in the age of unregulated online information.

Navigating Truth in a Digital Era

Steph Spyro, the Express's senior political correspondent and environment editor, underscored the importance of regulation and press accountability in sustaining trust. "Real journalism is based on restrictions and guidelines," she remarked, highlighting a commitment to context and fairness. Emma Loffhagen, features writer at the Evening Standard, highlighted the crucial importance of publications that provide a genuine pursuit of truth in journalism to counter misinformation spread in online spaces.

Embracing Tech: Challenges and Opportunities

The panel also acknowledged technological innovation as a catalyst for more inclusive reporting. From podcasts providing analytical depth to advancements in diversifying reporting methods, the journalists illuminated the opportunities that innovation brings. However, Julia Atherley, news reporter at The Sun, sounded a note of caution concerning the ethical role of AI, emphasising the enduring importance of human storytelling.

Crucial Partnerships: Advertisers in Journalism

Delving into the broader societal role of journalism, John Abiona, the Daily Mail's City reporter highlighted the investments made by news brands in investigative reporting. Julia backed John’s point while stressing the indispensable role of advertisers and agencies in supporting trusted journalism, particularly in funding impactful investigative work.

The panellists closed by discussing a collective desire for greater diversity and representation in newsrooms. Emma and John addressed the financial barriers hindering talented individuals, especially those from working-class backgrounds. Steph emphasised the necessity of diversity in the Westminster lobby, while Julia advocated for industry-wide initiatives to dismantle barriers and foster a more inclusive environment.

As these young journalists navigate the evolving news landscape, their insights offered a pragmatic perspective on the challenges and opportunities shaping the industry. Mindshare Huddle 2023 served as a platform for these emerging voices to share practical insights, providing a glimpse into the future of news with a commitment to authenticity and trust.
